# Generate an available hash

> POST /qr/hash/generate/

Asks the server for a random slug that is currently free, instead of guessing one and checking it.

```
POST   https://api.scanova.io/qr/hash/generate/
Authorization: 401f7ac837da42b97f613d789819ff93537bee6a
```

Requires the `CUSTOM_URL_HASH` quota — the same gate as [Check hash availability](/api-reference/management-api/qr/hash-check).

<ParamField body="domain" type="integer">
  Custom-domain primary key to generate against. Omit for the default short domain.
</ParamField>

<ParamField body="url_hash" type="string">
  Read-only — the generated slug.
</ParamField>

<ParamField body="valid" type="boolean">
  Read-only — always `true` for a freshly generated slug.
</ParamField>

<RequestExample>
  ```bash cURL theme={null}
  curl -X POST "https://api.scanova.io/qr/hash/generate/" \
    -H "Authorization: 401f7ac837da42b97f613d789819ff93537bee6a" \
    -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
    -d '{
        "domain": 42
    }'
  ```
</RequestExample>

<Note>
  Generation does not reserve the slug. Claim it promptly by passing it as `url_hash` on [Create a QR Code](/api-reference/management-api/qr/create) or [Change a QR Code's short-URL slug](/api-reference/management-api/qr/url-hash-update).
